On his way to rob a bank, a two-bit western outlaw named Dorsey has a brief love affair with a lonely young widow named Amanda. Afraid of getting caught, he sets off again. When Dorsey is reported killed, Amanda hires a ghost writer and capitalizes on her liaison by stretching the truth and creating a legend out of Dorsey. Soon the glorified story about the legendary outlaw becomes a private industry for Amanda. When Dorsey finds out about Amanda's exploitation he returns to her town to set the record straight but finds that his identity no longer belongs to him.
