Joker Jackson (Tony Curtis) and Noah Cullen (Sidney Poitier) are two thieves locked up in the same prison. One black, the other white, they can't stand each other, and are a constant source of irritation- avoiding all conversation and contact when they can. One day however, while shackled together for transport, they discover and opportunity for escape- they quickly take it and flee their captors. Unable to remove the shackles, they remain chained together- completely dependent on one another. When they eventually get rid of their chains, their hostility has been changed into a deep fellowship and healthy respect.
