Picture Quality:

High Definition Television, or HDTV, delivers brilliant, high-resolution images with over 5 times the sharpness compared to standard definition television (SDTV). HDTV signals have either 1080 lines interlaced or 720 lines progressive scan (compared to 480 lines interlaced for SDTV)
16x9 Aspect Ratio:

16x9 Aspect Ratio: When we refer to aspect ratio we are talking about the rectangular shape of the video image. Your standard TV has an aspect ratio of 4:3. That means the picture is 4 units wide for every three units of height. Meanwhile, the new HDTV standard is 16:9, which is 16 units of width for every 9 units of height.

The wider screen size compared to our traditional 4x3 aspect ratio TV's is ideal for watching movies, especially on bigger TVs, as more of the action is visible and most movies are intended to be viewed at the wider ratio. Thus, HDTV allows viewers to imitate the theatrical viewing experience in the comfort of their homes.

Audio:

HDTV includes the coding to provide the capability for Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound to further enhance the theatrical viewing experience. (The Movie Network also delivers 5.1 surround on our regular SDTV channels)

Receiving HDTV:

Most HD-capable TV's are monitors only, that can display all the digital formats (there are 18 of them) and need an external set top to tune and decode the digital signals. They are referred to as HDTV-ready sets.
